He was born at St.John of God in Subiaco on the 20th July 2004. When he was little, Kent was so shy. He always stood behind his parents, Tomio and Kimie. He had difficulty with his speech and talking skills. He couldn’t communicate with other children. His parents took him to Japanese speech therapy in Bunbury every month. It was only after he started tennis that his talking and communication skills improved a lot. Kent competed in the U14 Australian Championships and the team Championships for WA, while Bob was looking after a young Japanese team competing in the same event. During this time they got to know each other on and off the court, as Kent enjoyed swimming, shopping, training and going out to dinner with the Japanese boys. Bob quickly realised Kent was a very rare junior player. Most top players Kent’s age tend to focus purely on tennis training and do not place enough importance on academics and studying. Kent, however, was also very studious and loved mathematics and science. The backhand silhouette is based on Kent. Tomio’s cousin Taka (professional graphic designer) designed this specifically for the foundation. Bob Brett Tennis Logo is from his academy in San Remo Italy, where Marin Cilic had trained this academy for 8-9 years. Tomio and Bob put these two logos together. The icon at the top is the mascot of the WA state team whose name is “WASSA the back swan”. Andrea Rundle, Alison Kirk and Brad Ladyman managed 2016 WA U12 state team, which Kent was apart of. The 2016 WA state team won a silver medal. Kent was also a 2020 U18 WA state team member. I completed all of my meetings and I checked in at the Park Hyatt hotel in the late afternoon. Normally I stay at the ‘Mantra on Jolimont’ in Melbourne, but this time I booked the Park Hyatt instead. I couldn’t remember the details of my booking, but the Hyatt Receptionist said, ‘You are lucky’ and upgraded me to a better room. I went into the room. It was a big room with a living area. I took a glance at the bookshelf above the TV. One book fell over. I came to the bookshelf to pick the book up. This book was titled ‘Son and Father’. The cover page illustration is someone holding a watch which looked to be almost identical, if not the same to Craig holding Kent’s watch at Tennis West. What a coincidence! I contacted my friend Sharan Viiala and told her about this story. She suggested that I should buy the book. I decided to go to reception to ask the duty manager if I may buy the book. I explained about Kent’s passing and that I had traveled with Kent often. I also told her that Kent had a lot of good experiences at Melbourne Park. The Duty Manager handed it to me with a smile. She said It was a pleasure to give it to me as a compliment. Burton has enjoyed one of the biggest surges up the national rankings over the past year, having won WA State Championships alongside numerous junior singles and doubles events and being selected to represent WA at the National Teams Championships on the Gold Coast.
